the falling leaves...

autumn is my favorite time of year, but living in texas i don't get to experience that moment when the weather snaps and leaves start to fall. nonetheless, i am still overjoyed that the season is finally here! here are some of my top reasons why...

i'm a sucker for the cold and although we don't experience much of it down here, i am still constantly daydreaming about being in it. lol. one day, i will be able to spend the fall months somewhere other than texas.

snow is just as delicious, but there's something about those autumn leaves that just makes me smile. vibrant reds, golds, browns, and yellows...lovely.

what would any year be without a little - or in my case, a lot - of college football? texas's colors are burnt orange and white. burnt orange = the color of some fall leaves. coincidence? i think not! HOOK 'EM HORNS!

love, love, love sweater shopping. i wear them year round, but fall is when the cutest of the cute come out to play ;-) (absolutely LOVE this outfit, by the way)

now, i don't love nfl football nearly as much as college, but it still keeps sundays and mondays exciting. go texans!

as a family holiday, thanksgiving is our favorite. nothing like good company, good food, and football. (though, my favorite holiday personally is christmas)

candy galore, pumpkins, and decor! what is there not to love about halloween??

nyc is one of the most majestic places during fall, and everyone seems to be in higher spirits. there's no place i'd rather be during this season.

autumn is the perfect season to fall...no pun intended ;-)

HOOK 'EM HORNS!

i can't believe i haven't posted one single texas football post since the season started, but this one is absolutely fabulous and well worth the wait. the constant eyes of texas is kind of like a journal featuring mack brown and the texas football team written by espn sports analyst, pat forde. there are updates everyday filled with videos and anecdotes from mack and the team. anyone who knows me knows how obsessed i am with texas football, so y'all can imagine my delight when i stumbled upon this. the article below is the first of the series and can be found by clicking on good ole bevo below:

USTIN, Texas -- Mack Brown has asked for a show of hands.

It's Sunday afternoon, Sept. 5. He is standing in front of his Texas football team on the day after its 34-17 season-opening victory over Rice. Brown and his assistants have just run through game video with the players, offering commentary on all phases of the Longhorns' performance. Positives are sprinkled in among the critiques. Brown has congratulated his team on being 1-0, and called for the players to applaud themselves.

But the clapping was brief, and now it's time for the man in charge of arguably the biggest and most valuable brand in college football to drop some hard, big-picture truth on his players.

"Raise your hand if you played with as much passion and emotion as you ever have in a football game,"

Brown says, then looks out and counts the hands.

There were six.

"How much do you like being at Texas and like being a football player?" Brown continues. "Some of you like being at Texas more than you've earned the right to be here.

"I was embarrassed for myself. I was embarrassed for some of my coaches, not all. I was embarrassed for some of you players, not all. … It was kind of embarrassing.

"Boy, I'm scared. I'm worried about this team. I'm worried about it.

"We've got some entitlement in this room. Got to get that fixed. Got some selfishness in this room. Got to get that fixed. This isn't Texas football.

"What concerns me, we've got guys in this room who have won too easy. … You're ranked the fifth-best team in the country, and we just played OK. We have not earned that ranking."

For all the people who have labeled him "Mack the Nice" -- too soft on his players to make them as good as they can be -- this was an illustrative moment. He wasn't very nice.

Not mean. Not browbeating. Not profane or insulting or bullying.

But certainly not nice.

Being a motivator and a critic are just two parts of Mack Brown's job description.

Two hours later, Mack Brown is walking with his wife, Sally, to the team's Sunday victory dinner in an opulent dining hall in 100,119-seat Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. He sees wide receiver Marquise Goodwin ahead of him, wearing a New York Yankees hat, and calls him over.

"Would you please tell your fellow receiver Mike Davis that the Yankees don't wear red?" Brown asks, exchanging a playful fist bump with Goodwin. "He has a red Yankees hat. I hate red."

For the next 90 minutes, Brown is once again the paternal jokester who won over these players and their families as high schoolers. He is literally hands-on in expressing his affection for the players he just chewed out -- grabbing an elbow or a neck, slapping a belly or a back, giving a hug.

"We separate what we say out there [in the film room] with what we say in here," Brown says. "In here, we ask about their families and have fun with them."

During dinner, Brown quietly consoles cornerback Chykie Brown over the loss of his uncle Friday night -- the coach didn't hear about it until Sunday morning. He congratulates several freshmen on getting their first playing experience, asking each of them, "Did you have fun?" And he gives the business to Mike Davis when he sees him.

"Did Marquise talk to you?" Brown asks, blue eyes twinkling. "The Yankees wear a blue hat, not red."
Davis, a highly touted recruit who was in on 38 plays against Rice but did not catch a pass in his first college game, breaks into a smile.

"Did you block anybody yesterday?" Brown needles.

"Yes."

"You did?"

"Look at the film!" Davis says, laughing.

Brown has looked at the film. Three times, in fact, in less than 24 hours -- once he watched the broadcast copy, twice he watched the team's own cut. He'll review it one more time that night before moving on to discs of the next opponent, Wyoming.

Being a film freak is part of the Texas football coach's job. So is being the bad guy. And the father figure. And the motivator. And the face of the program to recruits, boosters, media and fans.

There are so many parts to Mack Brown's high-paying, high-pressure job that it's amazing one man can perform them all. ESPN.com gained unprecedented access to his program to see how he does it.

new name, fresh start...

much to my dismay, i have been neglecting my blog for far too long. the goal is to update at least once a week, so i decided that a fresh start is in order! i've changed the name to change the game...

stay tuned...

i have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning...

inspired.

i hope y'all had a great weekend!

a couple weeks ago, i was introduced to thecupcakeblog.com. this fabulous site features whimsical cupcakes decorated by true artists. i came across a "the very hungry caterpillar" themed cupcake-cake and knew i had to try to recreate it! it just so happened to be my baby cousin's 1st  birthday the following weekend and i was responsible for the cake, so that is exactly what i did.

not bad, if i do say so myself. at first, i wasn't sure how i felt about it, but it grew on me like leaves on a tree. the most challenging part was getting the right shade of green.

it feels good to get so much accomplished with the new business. =)

also, yesterday i was surprised with a package from pennsylvania.  i didn't recognize the handwriting or the address, but my sister in the uk had been asking me if i had received a ups package all week! i figured it was just another item for her that she couldn't get delivered overseas, but i was wrong. thinking that i would have to open the package up to put it in another box anyway, i lifted the flap and there it was...a beautiful, white and grey, buffalo check, gauze scarf from j.crew! i immediately tracked down my sister online and she surprised me with an "it's yours"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my readers, you will soon find that i have an extensive scarf collection of all different shapes, sizes, colors, prints, and fabrics. my new one is extremely versatile and i will be wearing it as often as possible. it's light enough to wear in the spring and summer and long enough to wrap around my neck in the fall and winter. i'm actually wearing it to work today paired with a black cardigan and red patent skinny belt =) thank you, sissy! xoxo

i love ina.

ina garten has always been my second favorite food network personality, only behind giada. the blend of simplicity and elegance behind her meals inspires me to cook and entertain whenever i can, and i do.

i also love her relationship with her husband, jeffrey. my brother in-law always says good ole jeffrey is the luckiest man alive. they seem so in love, which is sickening, but i guess when a man has a wife that cooks her way into his soul, who can blame them?

ina films barefoot contessa out of her fabulous hamptons barn she renovated especially for the show and it was featured in housebeautiful magazine in january 2009. i've had these images saved on my computer for a while, so i thought now was as good a time as any to share it with you all...or share it again for those who have already seen it.

this is the "barn". yes...the barn. i would happily live in this barn. wouldn't you?

her AMAZING kitchen, which is what you all see on the tele

i could definitely see myself "working" at this rustic desk!

a bed and bath filled with light. how darling is that bathtub?! i want! i need!

and last, but not least, an amazing patio out back. cocktail hour never looked so cozy.

now, if only i could find me a jeffrey to give me this kind of life. lol. jk. happy cinco de mayo, everyone! xoxo

textiles and paper goods, oh my!

one of my lovely sisters lives in the UK and is one of my fabulous blog sources. she finds things i would never find on my own. i once asked her to be a contributor on my blog, but she replied with an "i don't blog".  =P

this morning, she introduced me to Olive Manna. how cute is that name? i've always been somewhat obsessed with paper goods and school supplies so you all can imagine my excitement =D

this is their homepage image. love at first sight! how cute are those red clothespins?!

a peak at some of the goods. too cute for words!

now, hop on over to olive manna to add a little bit of happiness to your tuesday morning. yay!

...and this is totally out of the scope of this blog, but i am so proud of my friend, phuc nguyen. if any of y'all are into cars, read this article featuring phuc's new and improved, award-winning civic. congratulations, sweetie!

walls of endless knowledge

one reason why i have not and will not purchase a kindle or any other e-reader is because i love the look of books. in elementary school, i used to get so excited when it was book fair time. i would spend the designated 15 minutes there with my classmates but would then come back after hours with my sister or mom.  i was begging for books instead of barbies. go figure!

when i was 12 years old, my parents moved us into a new house and my favorite piece of furniture from my then-new bedroom set was my bookshelf. it sat like a hutch on top of my light oak desk. my books were organized by height, followed by author, then title. had i known i'd still love bookshelves to this day, i would've taken a picture of it for you guys...or more for me. these days, not much has changed. i can spend hours on end in libraries and bookstores...and i do!

i'm so happy that bookshelves are getting the recognition they deserve nowadays! this one is simply inspiring and i hope to recreate it in my next home:

i found this bookcase last thursday night in the latest issue of my favorite design magazine, livingetc. isn't it lovely?  i love how the books are organized by color on plain white shelves. shoot... i love the entire room, minus the coffee table and light fixture that are a little too modern for my taste.

books to the ceiling,
books to the sky,
my pile of books is a mile high
how i love them! how i need them!
i'll have a long beard by the time i read them!

rainy day

houston, we have a problem.

thuy is at work on this dark, humid, rainy day. i love the rain, but only when i'm in the confines of my own home. lol. for me, rain is one of the most beautiful acts of nature. i just love how without trying, it sets a mood. today, i'm in a rain-induced, pensive mood.

with so many things going on in everyday life, it's important to take a step back and just breathe. one of my "breathing exercises" is looking at all things related to weddings. i am not ashamed to say that i am 27, single, and NOT looking to be married anytime soon, yet i am almost obsessed with everything on and leading up to the "big day". instead of subscribing to martha stewart weddings like normal people who read the magazine as religiously as i do every season, i intentionally pay the extra $2 or whatever per issue i would be saving.

why, you ask? because i get a secret rush walking into a store and seeing a brand new issue sitting there, waiting for me to take home. like the song says, "this much is true." my eyes light up, my heart beats a little faster, and the excitement overwhelms my senses. i know this all may sound a little dramatic, but it is all very true. i don't know exactly where my love for all-things-wedding came from, but i have an inkling that it all started with one of my sisters, who, just as i did, grew up loving weddings. i never questioned seeing her sitting in her room or on the couch looking at wedding magazines, even though she was single. lol. wherever it came from, i love it. i'm sure long after i'm married, everything will be just the same...and my future husband will probably worry that i'll want to redo our big day all over again. (and i will) ;-)

my favorite site of the moment i'd like to share with you all is weddinggawker.com. if you love weddings as much as i do, you will fall in love. it highlights random wedding decor, photographers, themes, real weddings, everything you could possibly think of. check out these awesome invitations. a little wordy for my taste, but i love the story <3

and for those who are curious of what wedding gawker is all about...

have a great friday, folks =)
